Woods Creek Trail Temporary Public Detour for Stormwater Improvements Starting the week of 23 March 2026
LEXINGTON, VA — The City of Lexington is providing an update regarding the temporary detour of a portion of the Woods Creek Trail for the construction of a new Stormwater Best Management Practice (BMP) catch basin.
Closure Details:
- Segment: The trail is closed between Lime Kiln Bridge Park and Overhill Drive.
- Purpose: To install a 14-acre drainage catch basin that will filter phosphorus and nitrogen, significantly reducing contaminants entering Woods Creek.
Pedestrian Detour Route
To ensure continued north-south connectivity for trail users, a marked pedestrian detour is now in place. Residents and visitors are advised to use the following neighborhood route to bypass the construction zone:
- From the South: Exit the trail at the Lime Kiln Bridge Park area and walk up White Street.
- Turn onto Highland: Continue along Highland Road.
- To Overhill: Turn right onto Jordan Street to reconnect with the trail at Overhill Drive.
Environmental Impact:
This project is a vital part of Lexington's commitment to water quality. The new BMP will act as a natural filter, slowing down stormwater and allowing sediments and pollutants to settle before water reaches the creek. This initiative protects the Maury River and supports broader Chesapeake Bay restoration efforts.
